| Kerala is having a large number of ancient temples. One such temple is Sree Chozhikkara Mahadeva temple at Kallara, an interior village in Kottayam district. This very rare west facing temple, where the
deity is usually powerful and benedictory, is believed to be more than 1400 years old according astrological calculation based on 'Deva Prasnas' conducted here. |

Importance
of the place
|
| The Dharmashastha temple was built by the dependants of the royal family of Ambalapuzha, who hailed from Manimalavadakkedethu Kaimal family. The idol of Sastha with Varada Hastha and sitting between Purna and Pushkala ( the goddesses of prosperity) ready to shower blessings. The poojas performed to shastha who is Lord of Sani, eradicates sanidosha include ghee abhisheka, lighting ghee lamp, neeranjanam, shasthru puja, saneeswara puja and muzhukkappu.. |

There is an Upadevatha temple in the temple premise of Chozhikkara for Bhagavathi called
Madathilkavilamma; which was once Arackal Menon family
diety. After obtaining Lord Siva's permission Madathilkavilamma was consecrated in a glass idol ( kannadi
prathishta) and makes a visit daily in the night to the original place of Arackal family..

Divine Power

| Here the consecrated idol is Siva linga inside the sanctum
sanctorium, separate poojas and naivedyam are conducted for
Sree Parvathy also. The diety of Lord Shiva is in a sitting posture, with Devi Parvathy sitting on his left thigh, Ganapathy and Subramaniyam on both sides, showing mudras of
parassu, deer, varadam and abhayam. Thus the diety is the holy family with happy and blessing mood. Lord Shiva along with Parvathy is more powerful and has more benedictory power as per Devi Bhagavatham and Adi
Sankaracharya's, Soundarya Lahari. Besides all these deities,
Nagayakshi, Rakshas, Brahma
Rakshas, Bhadra and Yakshi were consecrated in the temple, as subsidiary deities.

Vidya Gopala Mantra Samooharchana : Is held at least once in a year in this temple where there is presence of Lord Vishnu and is held for improving knowledge of the students
Srimad Bhagavatha Sapthaha Yagnam: This yagnam which is known as the emperor among yagnas is held in the temple continuously for the past 25 years. Efforts are on to change this yagnam to Bhagavatha Sathram without lessening the importance of reading. |

Akhandanama Japa Yagnam : during special occasions, in order to please
Mahadeva, (Non stop group chanting) continous social worship is conducted from 6 am to 6:30 pm, by chanting
Om: Hreem Nama Shivaya and mrythyunjaya mantras. Free feeding is also held by the devotees.
Ramayana Sathram : From last year onwards, during
Sreeramanavami, discourses are held. The theme is, how message from Ramayana helps in cementing family ties. With devotees' help free feeding is also conducted. |

Guruppakarcha Yagnam : The annual change in the planetary position of Jupiter casts bad effects on people both under certain stars. For such people yagnam and homam are conducted
Sanippakarcha Yagnam : Saturn's planetary position changes once in 2 ½ years and because of this, a lot of people suffer the ill effects like Ezhara
sani, Kandaka sani, Janma sani.People who suffer from the ill effects are identified and yaga and homa are conducted in their names and birth stars. |

Mahaprasadam Oottu
(Free feeding)
This is conducted in the temple during Sreemad Bhagavath Sapthaha
Yagnam, Navarathri music festival and Akhandanamajapa
yagnam. It is also planned to let devotees conduct free feeding daily for which they will have to book in advance. |

Customs and rituals
Pradakshinam (going round the temple) : This is the most important among the worshipping order of the temple. Offers respects to the lower dietes and chanting. The devotees goes round the temple once before getting inside the temple. Doing the pradakshina here is the most important ritual, which bestows on the devotee all that he wishes for.

Pooja: This is a special pooja
conducted to ward off the ill
effects of sani at a temple where
Lord Sastha's presence is being

conducts this pooja and there by
get rid of the ill effects of Sani.
Mrythyunjaya Pooja : This very rare and sacred pooja is conducted on last Sunday of every Malayalam month from 9:30 am. This is beneficial toward off chronic sickness and evil, to get long life, to escape from accidents, as also toward off from sins accumulated during the past births and to avoid Dasa Sandhi
Dosham. |

| Pradosha Pooja : This is a very important pooja as far as Siva temples are concerned and is conducted on pradosha day evening ( after 5:30 pm). This can be booked in advance and is conducted only in one person's name on a given day. Poverty alleviation, higher I.Q and bliss are the important benefits accured to the devotee |

Aiswarya Pooja : This special pooja is conducted on all full moon days at the Devi's feet. The devotees will be blessed.
Thalichukoda : For serpents. This pooja is conducted on Aayillyam days toward off evils of
Rahu.
Vishnu Pooja (Thiruvona Pooja): This special pooja is conducted on all Thiruvonam days. Vidya Gopala mantra archana is conducted for betterment in

Astrological Remedial Measures
Experts in astrology who have post-graduate qualification in Sanskrit and astrology will conduct Prasnam in the temple premises on request and advise the type of pooja to be conducted. |
